John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is one of the most famous marine parks in the United States and the first underwater park in the country. Located in Key Largo in the Florida Keys, the park protects approximately 70 nautical square miles of coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangrove forests.
The park is best known for its coral reef ecosystems and vibrant marine life. Visitors come from around the world to snorkel, scuba dive, and explore the underwater environments of the Florida Keys.
The park offers two small sandy beach areas near the visitor center where visitors can relax or launch kayaks. Although the beaches are not large oceanfront swimming beaches, they provide calm shallow waters ideal for families.
Facilities include picnic areas, boat tours, dive shops, kayak rentals, restrooms, and a visitor center with educational exhibits.
Water conditions are typically calm because the park is protected by offshore coral reefs. Visibility is often excellent for snorkeling and diving.
Visitors should always follow boating, snorkeling, and marine protection rules to preserve the fragile coral ecosystems.
