Located on the southern shore of Key West, Smathers Beach is the largest and most popular public beach on the island. Stretching nearly half a mile along South Roosevelt Boulevard, it’s famous for its palm tree–lined shores, turquoise waters, and postcard-perfect sunsets. Unlike many natural beaches in the Florida Keys, which can be rocky or narrow, Smathers was enhanced with imported white sand, giving it a smooth, wide shoreline ideal for swimming and relaxing.
Because it’s free to enter, centrally located, and loaded with amenities, Smathers is the go-to spot for both locals and visitors. Whether you want to spend the day kayaking, playing beach volleyball, or simply lounging in a chair under the palms, Smathers Beach offers a laid-back, tropical experience that captures the charm of Key West.
Key West’s beaches are naturally coral and rocky, so in the 1960s, the city trucked in soft white sand from the Bahamas to create Smathers Beach as a true sandy shoreline. Today, it remains one of the few wide and walkable beaches in Key West, drawing thousands of visitors each year.
It’s especially popular with Spring Breakers, couples, and families due to its easy access, lively vibe, and plentiful rentals. While it doesn’t offer the seclusion of hidden beaches, its size and amenities make it a must-visit during any trip to Key West.
