About This Beach

Located on Kauaʻi’s sunny south shore in the resort area of Poʻipū, Shipwreck Beach (officially Keoneloa Bay) is a wide, golden-sand stretch framed by rugged sea cliffs, crashing surf, and dramatic coastal trails. The beach earned its name from an old wooden shipwreck that once rested offshore decades ago — long gone now, but its legend remains part of the beach’s identity.

Shipwreck Beach is not ideal for swimming due to powerful waves and strong currents, but it’s a favorite among surfers, bodyboarders, hikers, and photographers. Its raw energy and natural beauty make it one of Kauaʻi’s most cinematic spots — it even appeared in movies like Six Days, Seven Nights. Visitors often come for sunrise views, coastal walks, and to watch locals surfing the strong breaks just beyond the reef.

📜 History & Unique Features

Historically known as Keoneloa, meaning “the long sands,” this bay was once home to ancient Hawaiian fishing villages and cultural sites. The name “Shipwreck Beach” became popular in the mid-20th century after a small wooden vessel ran aground and remained visible for years. Though the wreck has since vanished, the name stuck.
Today, the area is part of Poʻipū’s coastal heritage trail, a scenic route connecting significant geological and cultural landmarks. The cliffs at the eastern end are also a well-known local spot for cliff jumping (experienced jumpers only) and panoramic ocean views.

  • Watch expert surfers and bodyboarders ride the big south shore waves.
