About This Beach
Accessible only by a 20-minute hike over lava rock from Kua Bay, Makalawena is one of Hawaii’s last wild paradises. White sand coves, clear turquoise water, and no crowds define this spot within Kekaha Kai State Park. Green sea turtles nest here, and behind the beach lie anchialine ponds that host tiny red shrimp—an ancient ecosystem unique to Hawaii.
