Lake McConaughy—often called “Big Mac”—is Nebraska’s largest reservoir and one of the most surprising beach destinations in the Great Plains. Located near the town of Ogallala, this massive lake is known for its long stretches of white, sandy beaches, clear blue water, and wide-open shoreline that feels more like a coastal destination than an inland lake.
Stretching over 30 miles, Lake McConaughy attracts visitors for swimming, boating, camping, fishing, and classic summer beach days. With room to spread out, calm swimming areas, and expansive skies, it is a favorite destination for families, groups, and anyone looking for a true beach experience far from the ocean.
