Located between Waikiki and downtown Honolulu, Ala Moana Beach Park is one of Oahu’s most popular and accessible city beaches. This mile-long stretch of golden sand is protected by a large offshore reef, creating calm, clear waters ideal for swimming, stand-up paddling, and beginner snorkeling. Locals come here to jog, surf, picnic, or simply unwind after work, while visitors love the park’s combination of ocean views and convenient city amenities.
The setting blends tropical beauty and urban energy: palm trees frame the beach, high-rises shimmer across the skyline, and the neighboring Ala Moana Center (Hawaii’s largest shopping mall) provides instant access to dining and shopping. Across the channel lies Magic Island, a manmade peninsula popular for sunset walks and family gatherings.
Originally built in the 1930s on reclaimed swamp land, Ala Moana Beach Park was Honolulu’s first major public beach park. The offshore reef breaks the surf, allowing for safe swimming, while the outer reef still offers good waves for advanced surfers. “Ala Moana” translates to path to the sea, reflecting its connection between the city and ocean. The addition of Magic Island Lagoon in the 1960s expanded its family appeal, and today the park hosts annual cultural festivals, hula performances, and public events.
