About This Beach

A pocket of calm in the heart of Kailua-Kona, Kamakahonu—nicknamed King Kam or Kids’ Beach—sits between the Kailua Pier and the King Kamehameha hotel. The cove’s natural protection from the pier and rocks creates reliably gentle water ideal for first-time snorkelers and families. From shore you can enter over soft sand, then float above tame reef frequented by colorful reef fish. Steps away is Ahuʻena Heiau, a restored temple tied to King Kamehameha I, and the Kamakahonu National Historic Landmark, which gives the beach rare historical resonance in addition to its easy swimming. Amenities from the surrounding resort area (restrooms, food, rentals) are close, though there is no lifeguard on the beach itself. Come early for parking and glassy morning conditions; afternoons can bring a light onshore breeze. If you’re traveling with children or want a low-stress first snorkel, this is one of Kona’s most approachable entries to the ocean. Big Island Guide+2Love Big Island+2
