About This Beach

Within the Mauna Lani resort, 49 Black Sand Beach mixes dark lava grains with lighter coral, creating a photogenic peppered shoreline backed by rugged cliffs. Access is via a guard shack with a limited number of public beach passes; arrive early as stalls can fill. A trail and steps lead down to the cove, where you’ll find restrooms and showers. Snorkeling can be excellent along the rocky points when seas are calm; in swell, expect heavy surge and avoid the water. For a longer coastal walk, the Fishermen’s Trail links this cove to others in the resort.

Best Time to Visit: Mornings for parking and visibility; summer is typically calmer.
Quick Highlights: Limited but organized public access • Restrooms/showers • Striking black-sand cove.
