About This Beach
Accessible only by a 20-minute hike over lava rock from Kua Bay, Makalawena is one of Hawaii’s last wild paradises. White sand coves, clear turquoise water, and no crowds define this spot within Kekaha Kai State Park. Green sea turtles nest here, and behind the beach lie anchialine ponds that host tiny red shrimp—an ancient ecosystem unique to Hawaii.
No facilities exist, so bring supplies and respect the fragile habitat. Calm days invite swimming and snorkeling, while rough surf demands caution.
Best Time to Visit: May to October for dry trails and safe water.
