About This Beach
Near Kīlauea on Kauai’s north shore lies Secret Beach, known locally as Kauapea Beach—a sweeping half-mile stretch of golden sand bordered by steep lava cliffs and lush vegetation. Reached by a short but steep trail, this hidden gem offers seclusion, dramatic views of the Kilauea Lighthouse, and some of the island’s most photographed sunsets.
The surf can be rough during winter months, creating powerful waves that crash against black lava rocks. In summer, calmer conditions reveal tide pools and pockets of safe swimming. Because there are no facilities, visitors should bring essentials and respect neighboring private property near the trailhead.
Best Time to Visit: May to August for lighter surf and vivid evening light.
