About This Beach
At the westernmost edge of Kauai, Polihale State Park feels like the end of the world—in the best way. The beach extends for nearly 17 miles, the longest in Hawaii, framed by sand dunes over 100 feet tall. A bumpy, unpaved 5-mile road deters casual visitors, but those who make the journey are rewarded with surreal sunsets, vast solitude, and starlit skies unmarred by city light.
The water here is powerful—swimming is recommended only at the protected Queen’s Pond. Visitors can picnic, camp with a permit, or explore the dunes. Facilities are minimal: restrooms, showers, and picnic tables, but no potable water.
Polihale holds deep spiritual meaning for Native Hawaiians as the “gateway for spirits departing this world.” Drive carefully, tread lightly, and pack out everything you bring.
Best Time to Visit: April to October for dry access and gentle trade winds.
