About This Beach
Hidden on Kauai’s Nā Pali Coast, Honopu Beach—often called “Cathedral Beach”—is one of the most breathtaking and remote shorelines in Hawaii. Sheer green cliffs surround a golden crescent of sand accessible only by swimming from a boat or neighboring Kalalau Beach. Because landing boats is prohibited, Honopu remains untouched and silent except for the crash of waves and seabird calls.
A massive natural arch, the Honopu Arch, divides the beach into two halves and frames the turquoise Pacific like a natural cathedral window. Scenes from King Kong and Six Days, Seven Nights were filmed here, capturing its cinematic beauty. The surrounding valley was once home to ancient Hawaiian communities and is still considered sacred ground.
Visitors must bring all essentials—there are no restrooms, lifeguards, or shelters. Only strong swimmers should attempt the crossing, ideally in calm summer seas.
Best Time to Visit: May to September for calm water and minimal rain.
